Stockton
Gallery is located in The Stiver House, historic Unionville's oldest home.
The Stiver family arrived in Markham with the original Berczy
settlers in the 1790's, and this house has been the family
homestead for generations. Built in 1829, it is one of only
two existing pioneer era adobe brick structures in the province.
The
Stiver House, Circa 1979
Established by mother & daughter, Marein Stiver Newnham
& Susan Newnham Mitchell, The Stiver House opened to the
public in 1980 as Historic Unionville's first fine gifts &
crafts store.
Stockton
Gallery & The Stiver House 2005
In
1980, Unionville was declared "The Antique Capital of Canada",
because it housed seven excellent antique stores. Don Newnham,
Marein & Bill Newnham's son, operated the Stiver House Antiques
from 1982 until recently.
In 1985 a two-storey expansion was built on the back of the
house (where Stockton Gallery is now located) to showcase at
any one time over 100 unique pieces of antique furniture. The
Stiver House was one of the largest purveyors of refinished
antique pine Canadiana furniture in the country.
Keeping
with the tradition of excellence & quality the Stiver
House is known for; Stockton Gallery will showcase original
